Posted - 07/01/2009 : 5:02:11 PM A few years ago, I was at the 8-ball Southwest Challenge where I earned the dubious honor of being the first person in the whole room to lose a game. The announcer said go, I got an 8-break and scratch. It pretty much set the tone for the rest of my stay in Vegas. |

Posted - 06/27/2009 : 10:21:08 PM I actually agree with your comment in the middle of that T. Like the time you missed an eight that you should have made. Normally that would possibly cost you that game not 3 games before you got back to the table. Then their was our last match. The table roll cost you four games and if we were on one of the other tables you would have won. But you always get me back when it comes time for playoffs. Like that 5-0 you posted on me when I should have posted a break and run to open it.
There are no stupid questions except the one you just asked. |

Posted - 06/27/2009 : 3:06:23 PM I've got a couple that come to mind. One, I was playing in the valley against a good 5, and we were hill hill. My turn, i have one ball plus the black left. My opponent, only the black. My shot, long and straight (on a full size table) and i have to draw pretty heavily to get good on the black, although probably not as much as i initially thought. I drilled the cue with perfect low, smash the object ball toward the center of the pocket. Unfortunately, there was a small chunk of chalk that had fallen on the table near the mouth of the pocket that the object ball went over, making it leave the felt and hit the back of the pocket, propelling it into the air and back out onto the playing surface about 8 inches in front of the pocket. The white, meanwhile, snaps back like a @#$%ing yoyo, perfectly behind the black for game-winning shape, for my opponent as it were...
Second, this one didn't happen while hill hill, but I'm certain it led to my demise. I was playing against someone ranked higher and, plainly put, better than me, but holding my own. I believe it was 1-1 and I was working on finishing the table. I batter what I believe to be my final solid into the pocket, shaping up perfectly behind he black. With a fearsome sneer, I mark my pocket and, ignoring the pleas for timeout by my teammates, smash the 8 home. But see, what I had not realized was that the six ball, in it's dark green, felt-colored glory, was still on the table, only partially obscured by one of my opponent's remaining stripes. My face immediately turned a bright shade of three ball. It kinda went downhill from there.
I've got a few more. Namely, any time I've lost to Keith... Just kidding.
This would the best one, except for the fact that I managed to pull it together and recover, so you can file it under narrowly avoiding a bad beat. I was playing someone ranked evenly with me, but in all honesty someone I feel I should beat more often than not. the match was close, I was leading 3-2, one match from the hill. My opponent is on the black, but I have a ball in hand. Three balls on the table in awkwardly close proximity. I try to avoid breakout shots when they're not necessary because I invariably eff something up so I was entertaining alternatives. I take a timeout, and my coach does a horrible job of articulating an otherwise great idea. Seeing my confusion, he lines the shot up and says, "Just like this, right here," and actually hits the cue ball into the balls, spreading them apart. I'm assuming it was accidental, judging by the look of horror on his face. Over from my opponents' table, I hear, "That a ball in hand, T???" Affirmative, Scotty. Affirmative.
Lastly, my first season in nineball, I lined up an innocuous looking 4 ball shot. Made it. In the process, something knocked the 8 ball into a pocket too. Frustrated I poke at the white ball again, before realizing that we weren't playing 8 ball, and that rather than losing the frame I had actually gained another point by making the 8... before of course giving my opponent ball in hand. There was a brief debate as to whether or not my two points should count, but ultimately it was decided that because the cue had stopped rolling before I hit it a second time, that it was not a double hit, and rather just a foul on my next attempted shot. That brain fart was the equivalent of a 10-12 point swing, and ultimately, in my opinion, caused my loss. In the end, it was all in good fun, and we had a beer and a laugh over it. Still, felt kinda stupid.
That good enough for you, D-Rack?
I think the worst time to have a heart attack would be during a game of charades... or during a game of fake heart attack. |

Posted - 06/23/2009 : 5:10:21 PM Here is another one. I was playing against a 7. The 8 ball was at the side pocket. My last ball was about 5 inches from the corner. The cue ball was against the rail forcing me to shoot with top. There was a slight angle so no worries about scratching. No worries about the leave. I chalk up and go to shoot. Clank I miscue. The cue rolls up to my ball and hits it toward the pocket. My ball stops in the jaws of the pocket and the cue ball stops right before the rail. my opponent would not have had a shot on his ball if the cue had hit the rail. instead he got ball in hand and made his last ball then the 8.

Posted - 06/23/2009 : 4:52:22 PM In the playoffs my teammate gets his match to go hill hill and scratches on an 8 ball break. I play the next match. My match goes hill hill and I break the eight and scratch. Both of us broke it into the same side and scratched off of a kicked ball into the same corner. In that match we were up 2 to 1 before this happened. My team was speechless.
