Posted - 01/22/2010 : 5:08:49 PM havn't posted in a while.. but with the new session started.... here goes... the APA, in all it's wisdom, needs to find a way to REWARD players who excell and improve their skill level. As for now the only reason for playing is JUST HAVING FUN and paying your DUES each week. If you get better, your skill levels goes up and once again teams have a problem meeting the 23 rule. thus. SANDBAGGING is the only incentive offered to players. come on players... lets think about this and give the LEADERS something to work on!! and please don't suggest ANOTHER PATCH.... MOST players play to win ... the sandbagging usually only comes into play if players need to meet the 23 rule., or don't want to give up their handicap ....shoot well and remember I am only offending the people who are sandbagging or suggesting to their players to keep their skill level down IS THIS YOU ????? |

Posted - 01/31/2010 : 7:07:02 PM Casey & T, i agree whole heartedly that is why the majority of my team are newer players. it is a requirement that my employees play in the apa. (ok i only have 2 but still) also you may note that only 2 of 8 people on my team have over 50 matches. (my 8 ball team has 3 over 50) i do recruit outside. but the thing still is i practice alot and that is infectious so my whole team does. i dont think there is many teams that if you raise 4 or 5 of their skill levels they would find it much more difficult to play to the 23 rule. im not saying its not possible i am saying your options get fewer and fewer. your 2 or 3 has to show or your higher player cant play. now try it with 7 extra sl points on your team. VERY difficult. my team has raised 8 points in since the last season started. its gonna be tough this season. thats all im saying. and i WILL have to make changes next season. if im allowed cuz im qualified for regionals.
ok so i might be a 7 |

Posted - 01/31/2010 : 11:48:19 AM Amen, Casey. If you wait for players to come to you, it ain't gonna happen. Get on Facebook, or Mylame, or Twitter, and bug people until they join you just to shut you up. Worked for me...
And my buddy Eric Allen put a team together that all went to highschool together back in the day.
While we play pool, pool is not the only thing we do. It's one night a week (four in my case :P) where we get out of the house, spend some time together, have a drink (in my case, more like 8) and enjoy an evening.
I think the worst time to have a heart attack would be during a game of charades... or during a game of fake heart attack. |

Posted - 01/31/2010 : 10:27:05 AM Hi guys, Last week I got to my venue early to warm up. There were two guys playing on a table that we were going to take over at 7 pm for the regular League play. I hated to do this to them since they really seemed to be having a great time and were shooting with the intention of putting a ball in a pocket not just seeing how hard they could hit another ball. They asked what League was all about and was this a regular thing. We sat at the bar and I explained how it works and( more importantly)that we would love for them to join us. I guess what I'm telling you is that for the League to grow (and your team) you have to look from the inside out. Some time you must be the one to knock on the door, not wait inside to answer a knock. They left with an application, the League Office phone number and a copy of the dates to remember sheet as well as the knowledge that they would be welcome no matter what their skill level was. Good luck hunting those lower SL player, they are out there waiting in your venues. Casey

Posted - 01/31/2010 : 02:52:51 AM I have run into that problem too. I'm not talking about leaving the Wednesday night team but on my own team too. I have found that people's coworkers are the best source for low players. Hell at one point in time my half my team worked at Best Buy. I wish you well and hope you find some project players.

Posted - 01/30/2010 : 11:25:55 PM i have to agree with movistar a little bit. i have been looking for lower players to join my team and i find them very hard to find. also MOST of the people looking for teams tend to be 5s or better. and once you are above a certain level you almost HAVE to make your own team. i think, maybe, we could have one night perhaps that the 23 rule could be upped to 26 or 28. or maybe 3 players to 18 or 20. i dont know if its a good idea or not, but what i do know is it very nice to have my good friends (who are really good players) to be able to be on my team and us not be too top heavy. also i think i said it before that my teammates are getting better fairly quickly. i started last season with 8 players who sl added together were 28 and the same 8 players are now are 36. they all deserve their new skill levels but it makes it hard to keep a team together. i love playing and improving and so (it seems) do my teammates. and i do feel that if we improve too much we must become rivals. and while it is fun playing my friends i miss the comradery you get being on the same team. just my thoughts, thanks for listening

Posted - 01/26/2010 : 2:25:54 PM Ohh...and I too want to win some patches and bragging rights.
Last season, my team finished 1st overall (pre playoffs) and I got my first ever trophy. Yep....in all my 37 years of playing sports, I have NEVER won a trophy, so the night we won trophies (I didn't even know we would get such a thing) I was estatic.
So, from that standpoint, playing in the league was fun, but I can tell you, if we didn't add a little seriousness to our play, we certainly wouldn't have won trophies either. |

Posted - 01/26/2010 : 2:23:13 PM movistar - I completely get what your saying.
And Yes, we are in this league to have fun, but considering we pay too, there's more than just fun to be had. If I wanted to just have fun, I'd go to a bar and play for free. I'm here to have Fun and to win some $$, cause again, if I just wanted to have fun, I wouldn't spend 5 hours on a Wednesday night sitting around while teams enjoy smoke breaks in between each match and drag a night of pool into 5+ hours when it should only have taken 3.5 hours so I'm going to bed at 1:00 a.m. and getting up at 5:00 a.m.......
But Movistar, I do think there is an incentive to do well. It's called getting enough MVP points to make the MVP tourney. So a good player who improves their skill, in theory should make the MVP tourney, so I would think that's the incentive to do well.

Posted - 01/24/2010 : 9:46:38 PM Also, I have had to split both of my teams and we are still doing well. The reward for doing well has nothing to do with a number or a patch it has to do with know you are doing your best and getting better. This league is fun and that is what it is supposed to be.

Posted - 01/24/2010 : 9:43:43 PM keith it is okay we know you are the best you can be lol. You are a very good shot and i would never accuse you or anyone else that i know who plays the game because they love it and they want to be the best they can. i love it when i get accused. i am an 8 and people accuse me but there are people in this league that will do that and you cant do anything about it. just play your game and that is it. you can not get too worked up about it. Remember you play this game to be the best you can and let the other people worry about themselves. their opinions should not affect your game

Posted - 01/24/2010 : 4:37:58 PM You don't have to be guilty to get a rep for being a cheater. Some people have a good night and get labeled. Even more so if it is followed by a bad night or two. It would be nice to not be accused of sandbagging each time I play. If I win then I have been hiding my true abilities. If I lose then I am trying to control what my skill level is. If it is a close match then I am trying to add innings to the match. This is all BS cas those who actually know me know I want to be the best but I'm not.

Posted - 01/24/2010 : 09:44:03 AM hello Keith... just curious why you think Sandbaggers are offended by my accusations? If they ARE guilty.. there is NO reason to be offended.....and for those who are accused unjustly, I wasn't talking to them...my soapbox is large and has room for MANY players to drop by and leave their opinions... thank you for your opinion!
Taz.... I definitely play to HAVE FUN, and have met a LOT of very nice people thanks to the league (you and Phil included).... I was merely trying to show that just because things have been the same for many years, that changes can be made for the betterment of the league and players. in the "chain of command"... I believe in suggesting things to my leaders and then they can report to their "higher ups" (National Office)I believe THAT should have more weight than if a player is standing on a "soapbox" trying to be heard all across the nation
Jeff... thanks for the patch suggestion.... but I am afraid the league would run out of money if they gave a patch to ALL the people (including me) who choke and lose a game lol

If you are not in this league to have fun, you are playing in the wrong league. If you have an issue with paying dues, you need to find a league where you can play for free -- good luck on that.
"...If you get better, your skill levels goes up and once again teams have a problem meeting the 23 rule. thus. SANDBAGGING is the only incentive offered to players...."
Sandbagging is never an incentive. It is counter-productive...just ask a few of those players who have been lost the privilege of playing in the APA or do so under "probationary status" resulting on their entire teams being heavily scrutinized.
"... come on players... lets think about this and give the LEADERS something to work on!!..."
If your trying to address this to the "leaders" you'll need to write to the National Office in Saint Louis...at the Local Level, we simply follow the rules as set forth by our National Organization.
...and please don't suggest ANOTHER PATCH.... MOST players play to win ... the sandbagging usually only comes into play if players need to meet the 23 rule., or don't want to give up their handicap ....shoot well and remember I am only offending the people who are sandbagging or suggesting to their players to keep their skill level down IS THIS YOU ?????..."
No, sandbagging only comes into play when you are dealing with a player who lacks integrity. Otherwise, the player recognizes the need to either split the teams and bring in some friends, family or co-workers who are not skilled in the game of pool and introducing them to this great sport.

Posted - 01/23/2010 : 12:06:51 AM You don't just offend those that are guilty of sandbagging. You also offend those that are wrongly accused of sandbagging as well. So don't sit there on your soapbox and think that if anyone is offended that they are in the wrong.

Posted - 01/22/2010 : 5:36:57 PM I got my butt kicked twice for my new skill level!! lol...thats my reward... how about a choke patch? Like a patch with a guy choking himself, wait, no, a skeleton choking himself, that would be cool.
