to all my friends who have enjoyed playing me in 9 ball and getting 8 points when you spank me.... I have bowed out and discontinued playing 9 ball in the APA.. i have enjoyed the friends I met and the good times.. I fought and argued for SEVERAL years to change the 23 rule to 25 in nine ball (FOR GOOD REASON) but the league has not moved on my proposals and probably never will. I prefer to play with close friends and I do not care to play on a team where I can't help improve my teammates play thus making their skill level go up and, because of the "NUMBERS" I was forced to quit my team because there was no possibly way for me to play if any player went up in skill level... until things change.. I will not play nine ball..good luck to all the people who strive to improve their game these people are "Pool Players" not "Sandbaggers"...and remember... if anything I post doesn't apply to YOU.. I am NOT talking to you...so never take it personal

I understand Movistar's frustration, but the reality is, I play on a nine ball team on Wednesdays. My captain is a SL8. I am a SL 7. We can both play and still put on a competitive showing. Sure, if all of our players improve and get promoted in SL, it will cause an eventual difficulty, but like Richard says, you kinda have to have a supply of low players. Maybe we're lucky, but somehow we have always managed to add a low player when we needed to. The hard part is convincing a new player to join the league. Once they see how much fun it is, they want to stay.

I think the worst time to have a heart attack would be during a game of charades... or during a game of fake heart attack.

So your answer is to make it easier for them to graduate? Using just your team as an example, how does it help if your skill level goes down by one and three of your teammates go up by one?

I don't have actual numbers, but I'm pretty sure the percentage of teams at nationals who have an 8 or a 9 is much higher than the percentage in regular league.

The fallacy in your proposal is the notion that the percent improvement required to "graduate" should be the same across skill levels. To that I would say that it's easier for a 2 to improve by 30% than it is for an 8 to improve by 15%, so the amount of improvement (measured as a percentage) required to graduate SHOULD be higher at the lower skill levels.

I feel your pain.
There are really two parts to this dilemma.
The first is putting together a team that allows a skill level 8 or 9 to play. For this you need a fresh supply of 1’s and 2’s. It is very doable. I have had a team together for 10 years now, but I have to skip the Summer session because of player availability.

The second part is putting together a competitive team that includes an 8 or 9. This is the hard part. My question to the APA is; Do the teams that make it to the National Championship represent the overall league? That is, percentage wise are the number of team in the Championship with 8’s and 9’s equal to the overall average of teams with 8’s and 9’s?
My feeling is that teams with 8’s and 9’s do not compete as well as teams heavy with 4’s, 5’s, and 6’s.
We know that the 23 rule will not change and it will not help if it does change to 25. I believe that this would just make the strong teams stronger, five 5’s for example.
I have an idea that would narrow the gap, keep the 23 rule, and still promote the low skill level players.

If you look at the distribution of the skill levels in 9-ball you will see that it is not very even. There are large steps from 1 thru 3, and small steps from 7 thru 9.
A 2 needs 36% more points than a 1, a 3 needs 32% more than a 2. An 8 needs 18% more than a 7, and a ‘9’ needs just 15% more than an ‘8’.
My idea is to even the differences between skill levels and eliminate one skill level by creating a new scale from 1 to 8. With the same percentage difference between any two players one skill level apart, two skill levels apart, and so on. It uses a simple geometric progression. There are of course some round off errors.
14 18 23 29 36 46 59 75
The difference between any two skill levels is 27%, between any two skill levels two apart is around 60%, between any two skill levels three apart is about 100%.
The fact that this scale evens out all of the differences between skill levels should be enough to give it a real consideration.
I have had a lot of 1's, 2's, and 3's on my team and I see how hard it is to graduate through the skill levels. Especially from 1 to 2.
