on the break a player stokes the cue ball and misses the rack it comes back to him and instead of letting it go he stops the cue ball picking it up and repositioning it for a second attempt.....my thought is that he should have let the cue ball come to a stop by itself, then rebreak if a legal break did not occur. also is this a foul?

Joe, shame on you, confusing Jinny like that.
A foul cannot occur until the rack is struck, legally or not. So, if you stop the cue ball and it hasn't touched the rack, no foul. If it hits two rails, then the rack, then goes in a pocket, foul.

I agree with you completely. I guess what stopped me, was the statement "the rack must be struck before a foul can occur" instead of "leagally struck". it's all in the wording, isn't it  |

Jinny you can't have a foul until you have a legal break. Stopping the ball after missing the rack would mean no legal break hence no foul
Isn't the object to make the object ball? But yes you are right the leave would be awesome if it was your shot. |

Jinny thanks for clarifying the rule especially the part about the cue ball possibly hitting the rack and scratching wheather or not it hit the rail first.....my question still remains the same is this a foul for the player to stop the cue ball while in motion???

Hmmm, re-reading the rule, I do see another question. If the ball does bounce around the table and eventually hits the rack, then scratches. Does the braking player change?

From the team manual:
BREAKING
To be a legal break, players must break from behind the head string, the head ball or second ball must be struck first and at least four object balls must be driven to the rails or a ball must be pocketed. The cue ball may not be shot into a rail before the rack. If the break does not qualify as legal, the balls are reracked and rebroken by the same player. If the break does not qualify as legal and results in a scratch, the balls are reracked and broken by the opposite player. THE RACK MUST BE STRUCK BEFORE A FOUL CAN
OCCUR.
Since the cue ball hit the rail first, it is already an illeagal break. So waiting for the cue ball to stop, may result in having to re-rack if the cue ball does find it's way to the rack. I think stopping the ball before that is a time saving act. right or wrong the result is the same. IMO |
