A situation came up last Wednesday and although the team we played against was gracious enough not to do it, there was comments made that we could have been forced to foreit a game.

We play a mixed league (8 and 9). Our team had 5 members present all night. Their team had 6 members present.

We played the 9 ball games soo fast (4 games in 2 hours) that while our 5th member had just started playing Game 4 of 8 Ball, the 5th Game of 9 ball was ready to start (i.e. we finished Game 4 and 5 was next).

Since our 6th player was not yet at the bar (nor were they required to since we had 5 players present) there was talk that we may have to forgeit Game 5 of 9-Ball.

Now to me it seems that if we fielded 5 players, than how is it our fault if 9 went so fast that we weren't able to put up our 5th player yet? Should we have just thrown innings and played slow, so as to drag out the time so that when our 5th player was done with Game 4 of 8 ball he'd be ready to play Game 5 of 9? I don't think that would be good sportsmanship.

I could understand if we only had 4 players show up and our 5th was running late, but even then, until Game 5 of 8 Ball starts there should be no talk of forfeiting Game 5 of 9 ball. I would think that a forfeit of Game 5 of 9 ball wouldn't even be considered until the start of Game 5 of 8 ball.

What is the policy on forfeits for Mixed Game Nights?

Thanks for the info.

"In another instance, exactly like yours, I called Phil and he asked if we had anymore 8 ball matches to play (cause I didn't want to call a forfeit on the other team) his brilliant suggestion was to play another 8-ball match on the empty 9-ball table to catch up. Made sense thus invoking item 4.b on page 20. "

This is exactly what ended up happening.

Steve:
This scenario came up a few times when I captained teams playing DJ 8&9 on Wed and Sun. Please read Item 4. Forfeits on page 20 of the Team Manual. Specifically item c. This occured during playoffs and the other team did not have their teammate available for the last game. "They were on the way" said the team captain. I told them I would wait for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes still no player. Technically I would have been correct in taking the forfeit according the "continuous play" in item c and even item a where it references being available 15 minutes before the appointed time. As team captain I waited another 15 minutes and still no player. I asked the opposing team captain to forfeit. It was not fair to our team to wait any longer.

In another instance, exactly like yours, I called Phil and he asked if we had anymore 8 ball matches to play (cause I didn't want to call a forfeit on the other team) his brilliant suggestion was to play another 8-ball match on the empty 9-ball table to catch up. Made sense thus invoking item 4.b on page 20.

I have taken the advice that Phil has given you regarding managing your players. If I know everyone has to play both 8 & 9. I manage it so that I dont ever put a player immediately up in 9-ball who just finished 8-ball. It comes back to bite you in the end. :-)

Manage your matches so that the same player doesn't play late in both 8-Ball and 9-Ball. If you don't do that, you run the risk of not having an AVAILABLE player for the last match in one or the other. If you don't have a player available to play, yes, the other team can take a forfeit in that match.
