Posted - 09/14/2010 : 4:02:16 PM Player takes a shot (legal no question) but is sloppy and hits the object ball with cue stick by accident afterwards. Totally changes the trajectory. Ball in hand? OR put back to where it should have been, and play where the cue lies? |

Posted - 02/18/2011 : 09:46:01 AM Treat each ball individually, and add that if the object ball was in motion when it was accidentally moved and ends up going into a pocket, it gets spotted.
So, if you accidentally deflect a moving ball into a pocket, it gets spotted. If you accidentally deflect a moving ball into a stationary ball, the second ball gets replaced whether it goes into a pocket or not. If you accidentally deflect a moving ball into another moving ball and either ball goes into a pocket, the ball that goes in gets spotted and the one that doesn't go in stays where it stops. If you accidentally deflect a moving ball into another moving ball and both balls go in, spot them both, in numeric order for 9-Ball and opponent's-balls-first in 8-Ball. If you accidentally deflect a moving ball into a stationary ball and the stationary ball deflects another moving ball into a pocket, the first moving ball stays where it is, the previously stationary ball gets replaced, and the moving ball deflected into the pocket gets spotted. If you deflect a moving ball and everything on the table goes in, I hope you were recording the shot because the video could go viral.
It's never a foul unless an accidentally moved ball subsequently contacts the cue ball. It is loss of turn unless the shooter pockets a ball that was NOT affected by anything that was accidentally moved.
All rulings based on what DID happen, not what WOULD HAVE happened. Note that this is how we rule LOCALLY, and how we would rule in a tournament we are running. It may or may not be how someone else would rule in their tournament, or how APA would rule at nationals. Other people may be more willing to play the "would have" game - we are not.

Posted - 02/17/2011 : 4:47:13 PM hey phil...long time no post...A follow up to the "accidental" movement of the object ball after it was hit by the cue ball... what is the ruling if that ball goes in a pocket? or causes ANOTHER object ball to go in a pocket... does the shooter continue to shoot? and if not is it a foul ? please don't say it is a WHAT IF shot, lets pretend it DID happen.. (and it has) Thanks |

Posted - 02/08/2011 : 8:23:53 PM Movistar is thinking along the right lines, probably because he's seen this question before.
There are two questions that have to be answered here. First, is this a foul? To answer that question, you have to answer this question: did any accidentally moved balls subsequently contact the cue ball? I believe the answer in this case is no, so there is no foul.
The second question is what to do with the object ball? This is where our policy of ruling only on what did happen and not what would have happened comes into play. Since the ball was in motion, you can't replace it, because there is nowhere to replace it to. We don't put it where it would have gone, since there will inevitably be great debate about where it would have gone and how many other balls it would have hit on its way there and where all the other balls would have gone and how many... Suffice it to say, you don't want to go there. Rather, we simply say replace any balls that were stationary before being accidentally moved, and leave the others where they stop. Since this ball was moving, it stays where it stops.

Posted - 10/09/2010 : 11:34:48 AM APrules... was the object ball player hit with the stick the same one he hit with the cueball? if so, was it rolling when it he hit it? if it was, HOW do you put it back where it was if it was rolling when it was hit? just asking..... |

Posted - 09/14/2010 : 8:35:50 PM The player not shooting puts the object ball back where it was. Shoot cue ball where it lies. No ball in hand.
If I disagree with you, it is because I am right. |
