Posted - 10/25/2005 : 10:01:17 AM There are a few reasons we put this bylaw in place several years ago (in fact, it was added at the same time that we added the whole section about paying for forfeits). First, we don't want to encourage teams to demand no-show forfeits if a team shows up a couple of minutes past the grace period. Making a no-show forfeit "free" for the team that's present would open up a whole can of worms regarding what time it really is, whose watch is right, why did so-and-so get a no-show and we didn't, etc. Requiring the team receiving the forfeit to pay regular fees encourages them to be a little more patient and discourages them from being picky about exact times.
Second, when an entire team doesn't show up, there's a good chance that team is in trouble. We try to work with these teams, help them find players, etc. in an effort to keep them playing and avoid disruption to the entire division, schedule, standings, and MVP races. It's hard enough to keep the team together without having to tell them "Oh, by the way, you owe $50 for the no-show."
Third, a no-show isn't as much of a pain for the players on the receiving team as an individual forfeit. A one-match forfeit usually happens at the end of the night, after your players have sat around all evening waiting to play. With a no-show, you know by about 8PM whether you can go home or not, and more often than not some players don't have to come at all - they get a phone call before they even leave work or home, so it's not much of an inconvenience at all. The requirement to pay for an individual forfeit is there to compensate those players who were present all evening and didn't get to play.

Please refer to your Local Bylaws (a copy of which is given to all team captains at the beginning of every session).
9. Forfeits, "....An exception to this rule is a five-match forfeit due to a no-show, in which case the team receiving the forfeits will be required to pay the usual fee for that night." |
