What is the rule on changing shafts mid game? I know that you can break your cue down and change shafts between games. What if your tip pops off and you have another shaft for that cue in your case? Can you change it out mid game or do you have to wait till between racks? What is the punishment on this if any?

Wrong answer.
Breaking down your cue is NOT a loss of game in APA. It is considered one of the worst forms of sportsmanship and all players are asked to discourage their teammates from this practice. |

breaking your cue down to change a shaft is not a problem... however, breaking your cue down while the other player is shooting is a concession and should be considdered a loss of game.

It is permissable to use a short cue in "cramped spaces" provided said cue is shared equally by both teams, regardless of whether the shorty is provided by the host location or a player. If a player has a short cue and is not willing to share it with his teammates and opponents, then that cue needs to stay in its case.
It is NOT okay to break down a 2 piece cue and use the shaft only to attempt a shot, under any circumstances.
It is NOT okay to attempt jump shots with a shorty. Any attempt at a jump shot must be done using your regular playing cue. |

I know you cant use a short cue to jump the ball but I dont know about cramped spaces. I know that if it were up to me that I would allow it.

You can't use a short cue ????? What about those locations and I know there are a few that I have played in where NO ONE could use a regular cue to make a good shot from certain positions on the table. I carry a short cue just for those circumstances. Your telling me that it's against the rules to use one. I find that hard to believe and don't think I've ever read anything in the rule book but I've been wrong before. Clarification would be good from the League Office. |

You have to use a regular cue. You can not change to a short one for a particular shot. You can change cues as many times throughout a match as you want, even between shots as long as it does not create a time problem. I do not believe there is a rule against changing shafts, unless you were doing it for a trick shot of some kind.

I know you are not alowed to have a shorter butt for a shot but what about a shorter shaft or a kids cue.

This question goes back to an OLD rule about changing cues during a match...that rule has been dropped.
I was told that by the league office that you can change cues as often as you need to durning a match now.
If you can change cues it seems only reasonable that you can change shafts....especially if the one you were using lost a tip!
You just can not break down a cue in order to make a jump shot and you can not use a special jump cue to make a jump shot....that will probably open another can of worms.

To clarify my question a little. You can break down your cue between games and I wanted to know about durring a game.

Honestly......I don't know the rule but there is a common sense answer.
If breaking down/replacing a good shaft during a match is NOT a punishable offense, why would replacing/fixing broken equipment?
Anyone who would not let their opponent replace/repair a broken cue should get a life!!!
