What if I'm putting dramatic draw on the cueball - and the cue ball pops up momentarily off the table - would that be a foul? A double hit foul? The same?
Last week while playing Torsten in nine ball a shot came up where I had to hit soft pocket speed but with a ton of draw to avoid scratching in the side. The object ball was only a few inches away -
Well, I did some sort of ugly draw miscue and the cueball popped up and actually landed on the top of the four ball I was aiming for, then bounced off it up onto the top part of the rail, then rolled back onto the playing surface and hit a rail... We all laughed; it was so ugly and unexpected. It actually made contact with the proper OB and then hit a rail
Torsten never even blinked and the beatings from him just continued - he played the CB where it lied. I never even paused to think about whether it was a foul - it was such a fluke thing.
But then tonight, during my 8ball beatings from bigrigtom match; I did it twice more.. and one of them the cueball popped up and inch or so off the table, then landed before reaching my object ball and it actually pocketed the ball in the intended pocket - I then just continued shooting...
On the drive home I was thinking about that and wouldn't it be a foul if you're attempting to put lots of draw on the cue ball and you miscue, and then the cueball lifts an inch or so off the table? Would that be the same as a scooping type of jump shot - which is a foul because it is a double hit? If so I think I fouled in all three of those cases and should have offered ball in hand. None of those shots felt like a double hit though but they did feel very ugly and each made that miscue noise?
Maybe such good players like Torsten and Bigrigtom noticed that it was a foul but just let it go? Those guys are so in control of the table it wouldn't've mattered in our match anyway. It's awesome to watch and especially play against. That's the best thing about APA, being able to see and play against such skillful pool.
Anyway, I hope there's no fourth time for me on that soft draw miscue shot but if there is I'll give them ball in hand. Those pros on youtube hit soft shots with lots of draw like that, I guess I'm just not there yet.

Posted - 12/12/2008 : 09:59:08 AM You must be talking about a different Torsten... Your shot in our match was not a foul. The foul on the scoop is, as Tommy said, done with intent of clearing an obstacle. There is no way to argue that an unintentional scoop can somehow benefit the shooter, save for an outrageous amount of luck resulting in a legal hit plus a hook.
I dunno if I'm ever in such control of a table, Richie. I just don't let on when a stroke of good fortune results in good position for my next shot.
I think the worst time to have a heart attack would be during a game of charades... or during a game of fake heart attack. |

Posted - 12/09/2008 : 10:34:02 AM I think you may be mis interpreting the whole ruling with regards to scooping the cue ball....but....the way I understand it is:
You can not intentionally scoop the cue ball in an effort to jump it up and clear an obstacle but this does not apply to an unintentional miss cue due to a badly executed attempt at severe draw.
Of course there is some subjectiveness in many situations that would require a judgement on the part of an observer as to whether or not the scoop was an intentional scoop or if it was a miscue. Also it may or may not result in a double hit and again there is room for observer interpretation of the intent and result.
Isn't pool a great game though!
