I am a skilled player mostly play 8ball, not very good at nine_ball(I'm not good at setting up the next shot). I was wondering how you get a skill level number and how competitive the environment is, I hate loosing I know theres people saying they just play for fun, but does everyone think that way? I know someone else who is a very skilled player I hope I could get him to join the league if I ever get in and enjoy it myself. I live in the San Fernando Valley.

As a guy you would start in the APA as a skill level 4. As you play matches you will be ranked according to the results of your matches. Your ranking will go up and down for the 1st 10 matches then it will begin to level out to a more steady number.
You skill level is then based on the best 10 matches of the last 20 matches played and after you have more than 10 you skill level will never drop more than 1 point below the skill level you established following those 1st 10 matches.
In 8 ball you can rise to skill level 7 or in 9 ball you can go up to a 9.
Hope that helps.

Wow, I wish someone would've told me that. I guess I just learned something new.

Well, the first sentence and the last sentence in Tom's description of the handicap system are accurate. It's also true that new players tend to jump around more than established players. Beyond that, we keep the details (best 10 of 20 is a guess, and incorrect) close to the vest, as the more one knows about the numbers the more they are tempted to use that information to gain an unfair advantage.

Thanks for the info, I joined but did not get to play last week hopefully tomorrow I'll get to play my first match.
Apparently I'm a SL5 according to some guy of the other team I played against. I know its not official until ten matches.
