We currently have byes in 14 of our 28 divisions. That's too many byes.

Based on our current (and probably inaccurate) counts, we need just eight more 9-Ball teams to send a fourth team to Nationals in August.

We may be coming up with ideas to address these observations in the near future. In the mean time, anybody got any suggestions?

Not sure if it is possible, but if you cut teams to 7 players, the extra players (the 8th person on a team) could get together and form a team. Maybe give some sort of reductions in weekly fees for the first season (i.e. $20/week instead of $30). And, there is always a possibility to cut there season end credits.

Here's a start. Everyone else can now tear it apart. And again, it may not be possible.

That sounds doable in theory, but in practice you would end up with a team full of 5's and higher. Nobody would give up their lower-rated players, and I don't think it would be fair to ask teams to vote someone "off the roster".

I have often wondered what would happen if we designated a division as a "draft" division. At the beginning of every session there would be a draft, where the captains basically choose players for their teams. Nobody in the division would be exempt from the draft, except those teams that qualify for the South Coast Championships. It would probably have to be an in-house division somewhere as well.

A draft could possibly kill it for some people. Those that have no ties to anyone may not care, but those that have known each other for some time, may not be happy being with someone they don't know. This would also lead into a learning curve that needs to be overcome on a yearly basis. We know our current player's strong points, their good match-ups, and when they need a time out. Learning new players every year would be tough. However, in the long-run, we would learn everyone's week and strong points, improving everyone's game and making the league stronger.

Back to the initial question...

What sort of incentive do give new teams to join a league? Set it up so that a new team is defined of a minimum of 5 or 6 people new to APA or that haven't played in a couple years and then offer them some incentive to play.

What about an email blast sent out to all inactive players. Invite them back. If you get a good enough response, don't reference them out to exsisting teams; see if you can put teams together.

I'll bounce more ideas your way when they hit me.

a draft could work if you ask each team to poll their players who would voluntarily participate in a draft to form new teams. Also, as I understand it, a number of players signed up for new teams that were to be formed at Butera's. I think the stumbling block for all this is to find people willing to captain these teams, not because of inexperience, but due to the work involved.
