Can someone direct me to where it explains how a skill level is determined? Im fairly new, and unsure how it all works. Thanks.

Am actually I am a nomad. I call Bakersfield home at the moment. I work in Camarillo, spend weeknights in North Hollywood. Currently play out of the Foothill Division in Southcoast APA and Bakersfield APA. Was playing out Valley Blue last season but the team broke up

Isn't the object to make the object ball? But yes you are right the leave would be awesome if it was your shot.

Where you at Cowboy? You have a partner?

I played in the doubles format. Probably would still be playing it if it were available. For me the format of alternate shot is good practice.
It died because the players that are interested are from different parts of the southcoast area and it tied up every weekend. Getting enough interest to start is easy but its difficult to keep it past one season if the players dont spread the word

Thanks for the info Taz....What do you feel was the reason doubles didnt work? Seems to me it would be fun with those incentives. And ive seen quite a few couples in our division. Do you know of any others asking about it in Moorpark or surrounding areas? Im new to all this, and really know nothing about setting this up. Really just feeling it out and see if there is any interest and going from there. Thanks, jeff

We tried Masters and you are correct. There are a few hi skill level players in each area, but no one area has enough to have their own "masters" league. The travelling killed the league.

We tried a doubles league, and it died as well. It has been a number of years now, but we would be more than willing to try it again, if enough players are interested and teams can be put together (minimum required 6).

Our area gets a guaranteed slot into the Jack 'n Jill Championships in Vegas (April), as well as the 8-Ball Doubles and 9-Ball Doubles Championships (Aug/Sept). In the past, it has simply gone to whoever requested the slot and paid the entry fee. We could use the slot(s) as the prize(s); however, the skill level limit would have to be 10.

As to moving skill level total to 25, there are other leagues out there who offer that. Feel free to join them. The 23 Rule is the most important rule in our system in order to keep teams from becoming "stacked". Once teams become stacked, the same two or three teams win every time. Our system gives every team a chance, even those who choose not to have a SL7/9 on their team.

I said as a group. I knew you would jump into it now but it would take more than one person. Just hold your horses until enough people are willing to give masters a try. Phil and Taz have said that if there are enough people that want to play they will do it. Hopefully we can test this by the end of 2010.

Hmmm, yeah, drinkin and travelin is kinda tough. Hey I talked to Sal, he is open to having scotch doubles, or Jack and Jill night sunday evenings, not sure of the difference in the 2. But it seems like it would be fun, so if anyone interested in playing sunday evenings , like say 5 or 6 pm, and have combined sl of 12 or less, lets do it....My gal bounces from 4-5 on sl, Ive been a 5...and we think we will be tough to beat, so bring it!! and lets have some fun eh? email me, let me know....thanks, jeffburkhammer@yahoo.com

The problem with Masters is that not enough people are willing to play in any one city and you end up with a team traveling all over two different counties. I think it is possible in a couple years to start up a couple masters leagues. That is when the younger high sl players like Matt, E, Renee, J, and myself feel that we as a group are ready. Then we may have enough people to join the previous generation of players to make it a local league.

That is great advice. Didnt realize that was an option.

Movistar, isn't that the reason they have the handicap system so ones, twos, and threes can compete with the higher handicapped players? To say that if a one wins once they should go up is unfair, my wife who is a one and has won several times. She can barley hold a stick and is still learning, would it be fair to her to move her up to a two? All of her wins have been fairly lucky and had she won and gone up to a two after her first win she may have never won a single match and would probably not be playing anymore. Isnt this a supposed to be fun league that wants new players? As far as raising to 23 rule to 25, the APA does offer a masters division, i suggest if eights and nines are having a hard time finding teams they should form their own teams and play there.
Jeff Burkhammer Posted - 09/16/2009 : 1:51:44 PM
My point is this, at my level 5 now, ive beaten 7 and 8's on the record, and have played 9's on the side, and feel I can beat them, But a player like Jerry, he to me should be a bit higher if he can hold a experienced level 5 to 3 points to his 75 like he did the other night., kinda throws the whole "equalizer" out of whack doesnt it?. I get what you said about incentive, and I can see raising my level as meaning I wont play as much, which would suck. So I guess in that situation I will look at singles to play, and quit the team, or start a team with low skill levels. But we, (my girlfriend and I) joined our team to play with our friends, so if that becomes the case, we will probably just quit and just play tournaments or something. We really want to do a Jack and Jill thing out of Buteras, gonna talk to Sal about tonight, any others interested???

I'm just curious if SL's are are based on National data/statistics or only regional data/statistics. Can somone answer this for me?

If I disagree with you, it is because I am right.

hi...glad you brought this up (skill levels)...
there really is no incentive in the APA to improve, because of the 23 rule... if your number goes up, your team has a difficult time playing higher skill levels.
I suggest that players consider , maybe raising the level in 9 ball to 25 since there are 8's and 9's (CAPTAINS... talk to your league operators)

some operators will suggest that, since there are 1'S that this offsets the higher levels... not true (in my thinking) because , if a 1 plays all season or maybe more, and WINS games, they should NOT remain a 1.
a 1 is somebody who can't hold a pool que or make balls, OR WIN ... they are beginners....if you can't beat them, they are not a legitimate 1 ...

Jeff, as for your question about how levels are determined... there is no (published) formula... but having a player "written up", has a lot of weight..... innings are crucial, but a player can have 10 innings in one game and then RUN the table but the computer doesn't see that.

let's keep track of scratches and ball in hand as part of the "formula"...
