Posted - 09/10/2010 : 09:08:49 AM Anyone else think this is totally absurd?
To many situation to list all the bad things.
I think the Captains in each area should be allowed to vote if they want this in effect on their league night of play..........
Has this ever been successfully implemented anywhere?
If so where?
For those of you who have no idea what i am talking about.... look on the APA home page under Mystery Teammate.
BAD IDEA but thats my 2 cents

Posted - 11/05/2010 : 10:54:32 PM Ed, you'll have to sign up again next session. The signature and the date on the sign-up forms are important.

Posted - 11/05/2010 : 9:46:58 PM hey phil. it might help getting people involved if you put a flyer in with the paperwork. alot of people i asked about it didnt know anything about it. i would have done it earlier but kept forgetting the paperwork at home. im looking forward to my match on monday, and you can keep me in it for next season.

Posted - 10/27/2010 : 9:15:28 PM The Mystery Teammate is a teammate, so they can do anything any other teammate can do.
This session we didn't have a lot of volunteers, just eight players and four teams. Two or three of the players probably won't get to be a Mystery Teammate, because we had no teams volunteer on the nights they could do it or because of skill level issues. It is tough to find a team for a 7/8, although we did find a team for the one 9 that volunteered.
We decided to hold off for the first four weeks just to see how many volunteers we got, then missed a couple more when I was out of town three weekends in a row.
The first Mystery Teammate played this week. He's a 6 and lost his match. Several people knew him because (1) he's on the BOG and there were some BOG members present, and (2) he's often the one taking care of the tables when we have tournaments at the Arena.
Next week we expect to have three more missions, followed by one the week after next, and that will be it for this session. Next session we'll probably hold off the first three weeks and the last three weeks, but that will give us ten weeks to match up teams and players. Hopefully, we'll have a few more volunteers next session, too.

Posted - 10/27/2010 : 11:16:02 AM Yes, we had one show up in Camarillo. He was well received by both teams, probably because several of the players already knew him. I like the idea. Richard |

Posted - 09/27/2010 : 1:40:58 PM hey taz that sounds fair, and i do trust your judgement. (more than my own when it comes to the 23 rule if history serves) if i know before hand what skill level they are im sure i can figure it out from there. ill see how my team feels this wed. but i think it should be fun.
and richard, i agree pj's gets very crowded. alot of the reason i dont play out of there. (i live less than i mile from there) i can see why you would want fewer players there. and as for the mystery thing. it would be nice to play you or get you on my team for a night. ive only gotten to play you once(at 8 ball regionals i think) and i enjoy your game. well i guess i will have to see you at another higher level tourny sometime.

Posted - 09/27/2010 : 10:17:32 AM Ed, You have picked the best place to play. Butera's provides practice tables and has the best equipment in the league. I play out of PJ's, we are packed, no place to practice, so there is no need to be there unless you are playing. Looks like Taz has thought this through. You do not need to worry about a 9 showing up, I will not be a mystery player...this Fall. Richard |

Posted - 09/26/2010 : 8:23:25 PM The League Office will not send out a mystery teammate that would create an issue with the 23 Rule. If your team tends to be top-heavy, a SL6-7 would not be sent your way. I guess this is where a little trust will be needed.
The mystery player and host team captain will both be contacted in advance in order to make sure the host team can accomodate the player and the mystery player is willing to travel to that area/bar/poolhall on the night in question, before the "mission" is assigned.
Having said that, once a team captain is contacted and agrees to host a mystery player and the mystery player agrees to take the mission, YES, the mystery player MUST get to play a match, otherwise, this program will fail miserably. |

Posted - 09/26/2010 : 5:25:09 PM hey richard. thats nice that you can decide ahead of time whos playing. i try but sometimes it doesnt work out. besides most of the time my whole team shows every night and i like that. they can practice on a practice table promotes unity i think. besides its a social thing for us.
as for the mystery player i know i will have ample time to plan. my ? is the obligation. do i HAVE to play that player or can i just use them as i would any another player.
both ways make me a little squeamish. i would like the freedom to play whom i wish, however i would not like to make someone travel a long way for nothing. and i cannot say that i would or would not play them before hand for sure. it depends on who we are playing and who is shooting well, and how the team is doing. etc. i have very few options as to whom i play when, so i like to have as much information as i can before i decide. sometimes that is after a couple matches have been played.
that being said, i think this is a brilliant idea. also i sincerely hope that there isnt too many "kinks" to work out. kudos to whomever thought of this concept, whether it is kept or not.

Posted - 09/26/2010 : 2:40:05 PM Ed, I always decide the five players that are going to play ahead of time so everybody knows if they need to be there or not. It works quite well. I even decide who will play early and late. You will know the skill level of your mystery player ahead of time so you can plan ahead. Richard |

Posted - 09/26/2010 : 12:26:14 PM personally i joined the league for 2 reasons. to get better at pool and to meet new people. i love playing new people. i love watching great pool. i love this idea. count me in. i only play 1 night now. and im the captain so i try not to play as much so my players can. this is a good way for me to get a couple more matches in. as for the strategy aspect, realistically ANYONE can have a great night or a bad one. im not afraid of playing against a random person. its new blood. my only worry is being able to coach them. i wont know their game as well but again it will make me a better coach i think. as long as i know at the beginning of the night i dont see a problem.
my question is... if i host a mystery player, he shows up. am i obligated to play them? i am in a tight place as far as the 23 rule. if a 7 8 or 9 shows (even a 6 is tough) i dont know if i can play them. i would feel bad if someone drove an hour or so to get here and then i cant play them.
