I've seen MVP rankings discussed here before, but I believed it was related to 8 ball. I was wondering if there could be a better way to determine the MVP in 9 ball. I don't expect the way it is done to change. I'm just curious what people think.
The first idea I came up with still takes into account if you lost not only if you won. It seems to me that a simple way to keep track of an MVP would be to add the points a person scores on a weekly basis (i.e. 20-0, 19-1, 18-2, etc.). Even if a person were to lose they could still collect points. I.e. a SL 5 plays an SL 6, the SL 6 wins 15-5, the SL 6 collects 15 MVP points and the SL 5 collects 5 MVP points.
The second idea (still takes into account if you lost) would be to multiply the score by your opponents Skill Level. I.e. a SL 5 plays an SL 6, the SL 6 wins 15-5, the SL 6 collects 90 MVP points (6x15=90)and the SL 5 collects 25 MVP points (5x5=25).

not sure who the LAST reply was directed at...I realize that several players responded to this thread, But I believe my posting was the ONLY one suggesting a change in the way the MPV is determined.
I Never suggested that this was a Football "thing" (BCS)....just wanted to see if ALL players could receive an EQUAL score for winning matches, which would be ONE for each match won.... this is really the way it is done in all sports.
It is good that Phil has the league broken down into tiers, so, maybe you should only get points when playing someone in YOUR tier....

Phil, it is amazing to me you have the tournament at all. I joined in the last days when the MVP, was the person with the most points, PERIOD!! It was a fight between Richard, Sean and Erwin every year in my neck of the woods. I never had a shot at it, not a chance in this world.
I appreciate you breaking it to the three tier system. It allows more players to play the MVP tournament, that otherwize wouldn't get a chance to play in such a fun tournament.
I like the system we have now, the MVP should come from the pool table, not the "BCS"

Or maybe just one extra to the winner and the loser still gets 0

To add to the chaos what about adding one point for playing thus if two 7s play the winner gets 8 and the loser gets 1

Funny and true. I actually heard someone say this about me a couple of seasons ago. "That guy is the luckiest player I have ever seen. He practically never misses."
Needless to say, I was quite amused. Reason #1 being, I miss frequently enough, and Reason #2, on the off chance I make a shot, at least 50% of the time it's intentional. 
I think the worst time to have a heart attack would be during a game of charades... or during a game of fake heart attack. |

Actually Torsten.............that would be unfair to all other players as most of us have seen you shoot and believe you do it blindfold. And no........that wasn't meant to be a complement.

Not only does the system work as well as anyone could hope it could, there isn't a single player on any team that isn't motivated by it.
Instead of complaining about the way things are done now, why not brainstorm inventive ideas on how to promote our league and get more interest.
Just recently, we added the Tournament of Champions to our APA tourney rotation. In my opinion, it's been a big success.
Why don't we dream up some ideas for recurring "theme" tournaments. I was thinking something along the lines of blindfolded scotch random draw doubles. Not sure I'm gonna get much support here but...

My intention was not to ruffle anybodies feathers. I have played in three MVP tournaments and although I did not play as well as I would have liked to I have enjoyed each of the tournaments I played in and have met some really nice people. My point is like it or not the MVP point system works. |

Hey Hey Hey now we don't need any talk like that. I have enjoyed the MVP races and played in a few tournaments over the past few years. It is a fun and competitive sideline to the team part of the APA. Plus winning the MVP tournament gets you into the singles regionals. Some of us participate very regularly in the singles aspect of APA. I would hate to see it go. |

There is always the option of getting rid of the MVP points all together. After all, this is a team sport. |

Did you mean to say "there is no incentive to accept the challenge of playing a better player, because you can get your point by playing the weakest player on the other team"?
There's another problem with this - teams of five would have an advantage over teams of eight, because each player plays more often.
There is no perfect calculation. MVP, by it's very nature, is not quantifiable. But we have to use something (we are NOT going to make it a popularity contest with voting), so we choose something that gives you an incentive to play better players and rewards you for winning those matches.

this is a simple solution for BOTH eight ball and nine ball....
FORGET the ratings and points.... just give a player one point for each match won and the math is simple.....
win 8 matches (not games)... get eight points
lose 5 matches get 0 points
that way there is NO advantage to playing a higher ranking player just to "get his rating points" |
