Hi All,
Just wanted to let you know the the San Diego Classic started today and everything is off to a great start!!!
I won my first match today 9-0. Thanks to all of you who played challenge matches with me over the last few weeks...it helped me get in stroke :)
The venue is beautiful...and the players are all thrilled to get the tour started here.
If you'd like to see some highlights from the event, you can go to www.wpba.com and check out the photos and write-ups. There are also tournament brackets so that you can follow the progress of your favorite players.
Hopefully, some of you will be able to take some time and come down to catch the WPBA ladies and myself in action.
Huge thanks to Phil and Taz who came down Monday and volunteered their time to help me with site set-up. Fortunately, they didn't have to work too hard :)
Thanks also to some of you SouthCoast APA'ers who are coming down to work as shot clock volunteers this weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing you!
All the best,
Melissa

Update: Ok...I won my next match...but it was a little bit of a struggle. I didn;t feel very comfortable for the first few games...a little nervous, a little fatigue. I even missed ball in hand one game...took my eye of the ball because I took the easy shot for granted. (see? it happens to pros, too!)
Anyhow, I took a 5 minute break at 4-4 to regroup and think about what was going on. I told myself that it was just a race to 5 at that point (since it was 4-4)...and that I could focus and win a race to 5. I came back and immediately made a 1-9 combo to go up 5-4, then I made a 2-9 carom to go up 6-4. From that point, I felt more confident and more like myself...and I played much better.
I play again tomorrow evening...and I have some new SouthCoast APA friends who will be here to root me on. I'll do my best to make y'all proud!
All the best,
Melissa

That is great Melissa.
Keep up the winning, you have a lot of people from here sending you good vibes. It is nice to hear that the pros do some of the same bonehead stuff we do.
Good luck
Moose

Update: OK...so I won again last night, but still don't feel like I am playing close to where I should be. Nerves are definitely still a factor, but I did my best to accept that and go with the flow. When I am nervous, I know that I have to make a concentrated effort to slow down and play a little smarter. More safeties instead of aggressive shots...and I needed to remind myself to breathe. (Yes...I had to remind myself to breathe. When people feel anxious or nervous, they tend to move faster and hold their breath. Hence, the mental notes to slow down and breathe.)
There are several South Coast peeps down here to support me and the event. Harley and his girlfriend Jolene, Kato-san, D-Rack and his father Al, Ed Poplet...and Taz and Sham will be headed down today. Thanks to all of my new friends for coming down to root me on!
I'll be playing again this evening at 7:30...so send me positive energy around then!
I've been using this forum as kind of a tournament diary. I hope that some of you find it useful to know my thoughts and routine during an event...what it feels like for me to be out here...and my feelings about my performance.
Take care!

Good luck! Keep knockin' 'em down!
I think the worst time to have a heart attack would be during a game of charades... or during a game of fake heart attack. |

Play well tonight, and after you win the first match you get to show your stuff with Alison. Kick her sideways ...
I played you in Vegas at the SWC and was very impressed with your game. And thanks for sharing the things you're sharing with us. It's good to know that (1) pros have human failings like the rest of us, and (2) there are some things we can do to ensure that bad things don't happen ... at least as often.
Shoot well.
John

Melissa,
I can not express enough what a pleasure it was to meet you and get to watch you play. Sorry we were unable to watch and cheer you on in the later matches on Saturday. Next time we will plan our trip just to come out and cheer.
I look forward to more meetings in the future. Maybe someday I will actually get to play against you. Not that I have any chance, but it would be fun.
Thanks for being a part of our league.
