Would the answer be that you get what their skill level was when you played them and that people make mistakes.
You're right, Keith, I meant D-Rack, not Torsten. My bad.
Keep trying on the MVP points, though...

MVP points earned against a new player. Against a new male you get 3 points for both 8 & 9 ball. Against a new female I would guess 3 for 8 ball and 2 for 9 ball. Richard |

Oh, I'm sorry. That is incorrect. Thanks for playing, we have some lovely parting gifts for you!

ok, I'll give it a shot.
Since a new player has no skill level coming into the game. It would make sense you would collect the "newly established" skill level after the match is completed. |

MVP points are determined by adding up the skill levels of the players one has defeated and then subtracting one point for each loss?

I don't know what this has to do with the original post, but:

You earn with a victory the number of points that coincide with whatever skil level is on the scoresheet for the person you play. If it is a player that is being added, when you call the league office to get the O.K. for them to play you are informed of their current skil level that is the points you earn. If you can not contact the league office new players start at:
8-ball Male 4 female 3 9-ball male 4 female 2 |

I know there's someone out there who knows, and I know that person participates on this message board. We had an email exchange about it a while back.

Phil, I know when you play a NEW male in 8 or 9 ball he is a 4 but if you beat him you only get 3 MVP points.
I am not sure how that works when you play a NEW female. I believe you get the 2 points that she is originally ranked in 9 ball or 3 points she is originally ranked in 8 ball.

I see Matt pulled a quote from a 2005 thread.
As I looked for documentation about this subject, I was suprised I could find none on this site or poolplayers.com.
Phil, once the correct answer is posted, could you also point me in the right direction for this documentation?
Thanks, J |

Ok, ok, enough of the fun.
Tom, I'm surprised that you didn't know this, since the discrepancy is what we discussed in our emails.
In 8-Ball, you get 3 MVP points for beating a new player, male or female.
In 9-Ball, you get 4 MVP points for beating a new male, and 2 for beating a new female.
Why is it this way? History. Back in the old days (the really old days, when I first started playing APA), everyone started as a 3 in 8-Ball and there was no 9-Ball. The system gave you 3 points for beating a new player. Then the starting skill levels were changed based on gender, but the system stayed the same (I don't know if it was an oversight or if it was intentional). Then 9-Ball came along, and in their wisdom APA decided to award the points the way they do (4 and 2). They also decided NOT to change 8-Ball.
There you have it. We use the points awarded by the system and changing it would be next to impossible. It would actually be easier to get the system changed at the national level, and that's not easy at all.
It's actually not documented anywhere. Part of that is by design, as MVP programs vary in different league areas. This is just the one we chose to use. We should probably document it on our local website, maybe a page about the MVP program that includes this explanation. It could also include the answer to the question I get multiple times every session, "why is my new player not showing up on the MVP list?". Maybe I'll create that page when I have some time.
Phil
PS - I know you all knew the answer, but nobody wanted to be the BI SCAM...
