Last night during one of our playoff games an opposing player attempted to break and mis-cued. This player then used his cue to stop the cue ball from scratching. I mentioned to the other team that the player should not have stopped the cue because if it scratches then he loses his turn to break. I was informed that I was not correct and that it must be a legal break first.

Here are the words directly from the Team manual...

3. BREAKING
To be a legal break, players must break from behind the head string, the head ball or second ball must be struck first and at least four object balls must be driven to the rails or a ball must be pocketed. The cue ball may not be shot into a rail before the rack. If the break does not qualify as legal, the balls are reracked and rebroken by the same player. If the break does not qualify as legal and results in a scratch, the balls are reracked and broken by the opposite
player. THE RACK MUST BE STRUCK BEFORE A FOUL CAN
OCCUR. Breaking safe or soft is not allowed. The League Operator may
make judgments and issue penalties to teams and players who are not breaking
hard. Breaking just hard enough to comply with this rule is not a guarantee
against penalties. Remember, break as hard as you can with control.

In the situation you described, it is not clear whether the rack was struck or not. If I'm interpreting your post correctly, and the rack was NOT struck, there was no foul.

Ok, So what if the CUE ball was headed for the rack and was gonna make contact. but the player stops the ball prior to the ball hitting the rack. Thats ok???? THe player stopped the ball from hitting the rack by pushing it to the rail. Never allowing it to happen hows that fair?

So I can miss Q and as l long as i grab the cue, or smack the ball, throw a beer at it (WHATEVER) and it doesn't have a chance to hit the rack I get to re-break? LOL

The situation was in the Finals of playoffs. Player A, Struck the Cue but didn't like the speed he hit it (CALL IT A MISS Q or Whatever) Bottom line the ball didn't have the power he liked so he used his cue to make sure the ball didn't strike the rack....... he gets to break again? Wouldn't that be a DOUBLE hit foul at BARE min. ???????????

No foul. The rack was not struck. If the other player did the same thing, it wouldn't be a foul for him either, so it's fair.

If your reflexes are good enough to make a decision on whether you've hit it well enough and stop the break before it hits the rack on anything other than a mi****, that would be very impressive.

I think the worst time to have a heart attack would be during a game of charades... or during a game of fake heart attack.
