Hi Phil & Taz I plan to be in Las Vegas at the Riviera Hotel from Sep 28-Oct 1, which coincidentally is the same time frame of the three person 9-ball tournament (Sep 29 & 30). I've only played APA 8-Ball and have never played on a 9-ball team, but would certainly love to play in this event if possible. What would I have to do to qualify? I have no team, but am willing to pay all personal associated costs for my entry. Please advise.
Thanx Victor |

The good news is that a player with less than ten 9-Ball scores can still play in the Southwest Challenge, at a skill level one higher than their 8-Ball skill level.
The bad news is that the Southwest Challenge IS a team event, so we can only sign up three-person teams. It is also a package event, meaning each team is required to pay the package price, which includes one room for three nights at the Riviera. In order to get the space in the convention center and the labor to set up the room, etc., we have to guarantee the hotel that our group will book a certain number of rooms, and this is how we do it.
We can put your name on a list of players who are available that weekend, in case some team is looking for a third player. However, it would be up to you to work out the details of who pays what portion of the package price if you won't be using the room. There is also a chance that we may need a player at the last minute, due to some unforeseen emergency. In that case, the team with the emergency is usually willing to take anyone available for just a third of the entry fee and green fees ($53 total). Those would be the most likely scenarios where we could get you into the event.
In any case, if you're going to be there anyway, we will be running mini tournaments thursday and friday nights and all day saturday. You are certainly welcome to come by and sign up for those.

Thanx for the info. I would love to sign up as a fill-in and am also interested in the mini tournaments. Do I need a card or some kind of verification of my skill level? If so, how do I get one?
Thanx again Victor |

You need a skill level card to play in minis. You can get that at the main tournament desk when you arrive.
