SOMETHING TO think about....need some feed back..
if a player is attempting a rather difficult shot and is not sure how to make it happen,.... what if a teammate or coach goes over and picks up a bridge and offers it to the player or verbally tells them about the bridge hanging on the rack, WITHOUT THE PLAYER INDICATING THAT THEY HAVE EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT IT...should this be considered illegal aid or coaching? I THINK SO !..... even telling a person to CHALK UP during their shot will affect the way a player shoots...
technically, this should be considered coaching... lets let the players play THEIR GAME....MAKE THEIR MISTAKES AND LEARN!
both situations happen all the time
just my opinion... but my opinion doesn't count in the APA..
thanks for your help

I agree coaches and observing players often make comments during a match to try and help a shooter make up his mind. If a player is trying to decide between a shot that requires a bridge and one that does not and someone points out where the bridge is than this could be considered help and warrent a timeout. However, chalk up is usually harmless. I agree let the shooter shoot!!!

Chalk up, take your time, stay down, etc. - these are general things that are more reminder/encouragement things than anything else. They are not geared at a specific shot, and are not considered coaching. If they were, then "come on, you can do it" would also be considered coaching since clearly a shooter's confidence is a factor in execution of any shot.

Pointing out where the bridge is, on the other hand, is a suggestion that the bridge is needed, and is specific to the shot at hand. Unless it is clear that the shooter was already looking for the bridge, this should be considered coaching.

Oh, and EVERYONE's opinion counts here to the extent that it influences our (and sometimes APA's) opinions...

"WITHOUT THE PLAYER INDICATING THAT THEY HAVE EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT IT"

Indicate to who? How do we know what anybody is thinking?

If someone, is on an opposing team. I can only assume his teammates know that player better then me. So I may have missed a very subtle "indication" that his or her teammate saw, and responded. To me that is not "coaching". It is speeding the game along.

If you have the thought "they did it to us, so we are going to do it to them" Think better of it.

We all want to win! win or lose, I want to say, "That was fun!" I will do all I can, to allow my opponent (team and actual) to enjoy the same.

I understand that telling the player to use the bridge when they are deciding between a shot that might require it and one that doesn't might influence their shot selection. But once they have clearly committed to a shot where they are leaning across the table I don't think it should be coaching to tell them to use a bridge. I'm not telling them which shot to hit, where to hit it, how hard to hit it or whether to use draw or follow. I'm just keeping them from miscueing just as I would be in saying "chalk up"
